Situated Learning and Social Learning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Arranged Learning and Social Learning - Essay Example He understands that learning is progressively successful when done in a gathering, particularly when the student gets hand-on understanding. In the study hall, the understudy is made to learn unique things which he may not identify with reality. . The understudy is given chilly, unsuitable realities bundled in polished books, wonderful study halls and logical guidelines. The outcome is, the understudy no longer appreciates the verse he peruses nor does any esteem taking in occur from different classes he joins in, with the exception of dry language and clichs. Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger, in their book, Arranged Learning : Legitimate Peripheral Participation, put forth a solid defense for Situated learning with its accentuation on the relevant setting and .social connection. While individuals learn things effectively and quicker under the states of authentic fringe support (LPP), it has some significant downsides, for example, the model applying inconspicuous impact on the students, with the goal that they adapt socially inadmissible conduct like hostility . As per Lave and Wenger. Authentic fringe interest (LPP) happens when the student starts to move from the outskirts of the network to its inside. Social connection is of foremost significance in arranged learning, with students getting engaged with network practice. Arranged picking up, as indicated by the creators, is for the most part unexpected, instead of intentional learning. We see instances of arranged learning on account of pre-schoolers, who figure out how to recount nursery rhymes or recount stories, seeing their friends do likewise .Situated learning happens when a guest to a nation learns its language altogether by communicating with the neighborhood individuals. Arranged learning has different defenders, for example, Brown, Collins and Duguid (1989) who propose the possibility of subjective apprenticeship. As indicated by Schoenfeld, numerical critical thinking is additionally a type of arranged learning. As all science instructors know, when the understudies are urged to consider arithmetic is regular day to day existence setting, they learn better and the numerical issues are tackled quicker. Kids appear to comprehend science better when they relate it to genuine circumstances and tackle it in a group.(Schoenfeld) A necessity of arranged learning is that information ought to be introduced in circumstances where the information would apply. For example, in an exercise on contact in material science, the student would comprehend the idea better when the individual in question is made to encounter the erosion between a nut and fastener when they are not oiled, and when they are oiled. An understudy medical attendant would figure out how to lift the patient better by doing it in the emergency clinic than by finding out about it in the homeroom. Likewise, a student specialist figures out how to fix your vehicle by hands on experience A guest in France would rapidly learn French just as the common signals of the French individuals. Arranged learning happens when a kid learns its primary language without any problem. A similar kid thinks that its hard to get familiar with an unknown dialect at school . As per William P. Poverty fighting in Saudi Arabia and in USA

Presentation Poverty is a significant worldwide scourge influencing billions of individuals around the globe. Both created and creating nations experience neediness related issues. As indicated by investigate on world demography, there are more than three billion individuals who get by on under $2.50 per day around the globe. This populace speaks to practically 50% of the total populace. Furthermore, the GDP of roughly forty seven poor nations is not exactly the riches possessed by seven most extravagant nations in the world.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on Poverty battling in Saudi Arabia and in USA explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More These insights unmistakably represent how imbalance in asset appropriation among countries has kept on influencing the expectations for everyday comforts of individuals. In understanding the idea of neediness, it is imperative to twofold accentuate the way that destitution cuts over the worldwide screen, going from Africa to America through the Arab world. As it were, it is an issue that pretty much every country attempts to address ceaselessly (Rosen Gayer, 2010). In light of the pessimistic effect of neediness, there is no uncertainty that the desire of each pioneer is to battle this scourge for all time so as to increase the living expectations of individuals. In that capacity, there are preventive projects which have been received in many nations. This report plates a portion of the destitution counteraction programs that have been received by Saudi Arabia and the United States in managing a worldwide issue, undermining the lives of billions of individuals around the globe. A section from basically concentrating on preventive projects, the report further integrates reasons for neediness in the two nations along with the monetary effect of the proposed measures programs. Destitution in Saudi Arabia When the vast majority consider Saudi Arabia, dominant part are generally obfuscated with th e suspicion that the nation must be very rich dependent on the way that it is the world’s driving oil maker. Saudi Arabians are subsequently connected with rich expectations for everyday comforts described by most recent American vehicles, significant level of innovation, architect brands and design and incalculable high class shopping centers around the nation (Rosen Gayer, 2010). This way of thinking conveys a great deal of weight despite the fact that the expectations for everyday comforts for most Saudi Arabians repudiate it. It brings up the issue of how the nation profits by oil based commodities generally spread in the nation. Would this be able to be utilized to increase the living expectations of a large number of its kin moping in destitution? Because of the nearness of oil in the nation like in most Arabic countries, a great number of Saudi Arabians comprehend the importance of carrying on with a fair way of life. The legislature has essentially put resources into battling destitution by starting projects that target lightening the life of its kin (Ramady, 2010).Advertising Looking for report on business financial aspects? Be that as it may, history has consistently enlisted low enlistment in instruction organizations, prompting a higher pace of ignorance in the nation than one would anticipate. Also, all Saudis who have accomplished the time of adulthood are qualified for a real estate parcel from the administration and an advance to empower them build a house and build up an establishment for their life. In the same way as other different nations around the globe, Saudi Arabia has encountered variances in monetary execution and steadiness. Its most elevated GDP per capita was in late 1970s and mid 1980s. This acknowledgment was for the most part a scribed to high oil costs, prompting tremendous income from oil deals. The expectations for everyday comforts of the vast majority were likewise admirable as each individual was esteemed at a GDP of US$16,650 in the year 1981. Shockingly, this pattern didn't proceed as the costs of oil definitely fell far and wide, bringing about monetary stagnation (Ramady, 2010). Combined with Saudi Arabia’s fall in oil creation, the GDP accepted low figures as individuals battled to adapt to the circumstance that was prompting poor expectations for everyday comforts. By late 1980s, the nation recorded a GDP of US$5,500. With different components becoming possibly the most important factor like the Gulf War that prompted the ascent in oil costs, Saudi Arabia experienced quantifiable monetary development by and by. Thus, it recorded US$9,000 as GDP in the year 1999. Despite the fact that Saudi Arabia has a far reaching social security net, disparity in asset conveyance and portion has increa sed scorn among greater part of its needy individuals. Continuously 1999, the National Commercial Bank showed that out of the twenty million residents, abundance of the country was being constrained by just a single hundred and twenty moguls. This national riches that was idea to profit the whole populace similarly was assessed at US$400 billion. Because of this slanted disclosure, 20% of men in the nation, extending between the age of twenty and twenty nine years needed business. This saw most family units experience outrageous strain in meeting their money related necessities. In reacting to the circumstance that was getting increasingly clear, the legislature started programs planned for making work for Saudis in the late 1990s. Somewhere in the range of 1995 and 2004, there were effective methodologies whose chief target was â€Å"Saudiization† of the work power (Ramady, 2010). Besides, there are a few enactments that have been embraced requiring five percent of the popul ace to be a piece of the private sector.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on Poverty battling in Saudi Arabia and in USA explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More To accomplish this objective, most Saudi firms are required to have at any rate five percent of workers being comprised of Saudi residents. At the end of the day, the administration has stayed concentrated on restricting odds of work for outsiders and expanding open doors for nearby residents. A portion of the measures which have been joined incorporate nonrenewal of work allows and raising visa charges that are to be paid by bosses before recruiting outsiders. Different projects target guaranteeing that more residents select for instruction to battle elevated levels of lack of education and making human services progressively reasonable among more residents (Ramady, 2010). Destitution anticipation in Saudi Arabia As referenced above, neediness stays a significant issue influencing the individua ls of Saudi Arabia. Exuding from entwined factors like inconsistent asset sharing, lack of education and legislative issues, the administration has stayed centered at setting up techniques and projects, which target alleviation of the effect of destitution and bringing down its heightening rate among Saudis (Ramady, 2010). This section of the report inspects a portion of the undertakings that have gone to be a wellspring of trust in numerous individuals who have figured out how to get by under close budgetary cutoff points. One of these projects is the social protection plan. This is considered as the most established program that was started to ease the expectations for everyday comforts of Saudis. The power behind this foundation was the Royal family through an announcement and endeavors from a few workplaces in the nation. The primary point of this program was to advance the expectations for everyday comforts of poor and penniless individuals in Saudi Arabia through benefits. Nor mal recipients of the activity incorporate yet not restricted to vagrants, incapacitated people and defenseless ladies (United Nations, 2002). The program likewise offers social assistance to impaired individuals, groups of detainees and those influenced by calamities. Moreover, the social office runs gainful activities, which empower destitute individuals to meet their every day needs. Noble cause associations are likewise regular in Saudi Arabia. These deliberate associations for the most part contain Saudis who are primarily keen on accomplishing social work. In endeavoring to improve the expectations for everyday comforts of individuals, noble cause are engaged with a wide scope of exercises including month to month help, monetary help to recently wedded people, help to patients in emergency clinics in homes and medical clinics, foundation of neighborliness homes, helping the vagrants and disabled and care for the older (United Nations, 2002). When all is said in done, the proje cts are planned for increasing social turn of events and improving the expectations for everyday comforts of poor families by tending to existing problems.Advertising Searching for report on business financial matters? Since the improvement of the social protection organization, the legislature keeps up its help and responsibility by guaranteeing that assets are distributed during national budgetary assignment. Other than this assignment, the sum apportioned has kept on expanding up to multiple times since the organization was set up. The social protection allotment increase went somewhere in the range of 42% and 38%. In the year 2002, the complete foundation esteem was 119,979,410 Saudi Riyal (United Nations, 2002). In reacting to the circumstance, the Ministry of Labor offers 50,000 Saudi Riyals to people who meet all requirements to be in fact debilitated. This methodology is planned for permitting debilitated individuals to run organizations and win a living. What's more, the dispatch of a retirement framework by the Saudi Arabian government was exceptionally acclaimed as one of the methods of t hinking about the old in the framework. The plan permits retirees to get a sensible sum from the administration to permit them have an ordinary existence in the wake of resigning from the common assistance. As indicated by the plan, government employees are deducted 9% of their compensation, which is added to 2% of the government’s spending plan (United Nations, 2002). Life + Sciences

Life + Sciences Having slept for a solid 8 hours last night, Im finally awake enough (and on top of homework enough) that I can blog, yayy. First: !!!!!!!! Decisions in 6 days! I honestly cannot believe its been nearly two years since I got into this place. Good luck to all of you! I cant wait to meet some of you at CPW :) Second: I remember when it came time for me to make my decision regarding which college I wanted to go to, I was pretty torn over my options. I was mainly choosing between MIT (which is just awesome) and the Rice-Baylor med program (which would prevent me from taking the MCAT). I thought Id share my thoughts on this matter since some of you admits (and soon-to-be admits!) might be wondering if MIT is a good school for pre-med students, especially since youve no doubt heard horror stories about the impossibility of maintaining a high GPA at MIT* My decision to pick MIT over Rice-Baylor was based largely on the fact that I knew I wanted to go into neuroscience (which is still a relatively new major at Rice) and the fact that MIT seemed to provide a ton of great opportunities for pre-med students, especially with several top-notch hospitals as well as Harvard Med basically next-door. College Board breaks down MIT majors as follows: Engineering: 38% Computer and Information Sciences: 13% Biology: 11% Mathematics: 10% Physical Sciences: 10% Business/Marketing: 7% Id say thats pretty accurate. While its true that many MIT students are engineering majors, the life sciences are definitely not ignored. About 20% (perhaps even a little more I just asked Suzie 12 whos sitting next to me, and she estimated that about 25% of MIT students are life sci majors) of MIT students are Biology, Chem, or Brain/CogSci majors. Speaking from the perspective of a Course 7/9 (Bio and Brain/Cog) student, I can definitely say I dont feel lonely in either department :) Heres a list of some opportunities MIT provides its life science majors: UROPs The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program a.k.a. what almost every MIT student participates in at some point during their MIT career. You get to do research with some of the smartest people in the world, and if youre lucky, you get to publish something of your own. Internships/Fellowships I get at least one email every week from the Bio and Brain/Cog departments concerning available internships and fellowships. Saves me the trouble of having to look them up :) Seminars Undergraduates, graduates, and professors often come together to talk about different topics and latest in scientific research. I should go to more of these Visiting Scholars There are soo many talks each week from researchers and scholars from other schools; take a look at the MIT events calendar theres always way too much going on. Street Cred when I email people and say, hey, Im interested in working with you do you have any openings in your lab? Let me know, people actually read the email and respond :) If youre interested in knowing more about Life Sciences at MIT, you should check out their new website and once you do that, go distract yourself with some stumbling so you dont think about decisions until Pi Day. Best of luck once again! *which is false, by the way. I know several sophomores with 5.0 GPAs right now, and I even know some seniors who have made it through MIT, participated in a good number of extracurriculars, and have never gotten anything lower than an A. Basically, my point is: its possible to maintain great grades here. So dont let fears of a low GPA stop you from coming here!

A radical democrat King’s Last Campaign Free Essays

The task of this paper is two-fold; first, this paper will trace and explain the evolution of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s belief that war, racism and economic injustice are all intertwined and can be dealt with the restructuring of society’s priorities and addressed the necessity of a revolution of values; second, this paper will also explain how he carried out his beliefs in the Memphis Strike and the Poor People’s Campaign in 1968 [what the author and University of Washington professor, Michael K. Honey called â€Å"Martin Luther King’s Last Campaign†]. We will write a custom essay sample on A radical democrat: King’s Last Campaign or any similar topic only for you Order Now At the onset of this paper, it is important to note that King’s ‘background’ [which includes his race, habituation, education and religion among many others] is crucial in his struggle against racial discrimination, violence and economic injustice as experienced by blacks in the United States of America. The son of a minister, he was habituated in the teachings of Christianity and was able to attend and complete his formal education with degrees in sociology, theology and divinity. King was a pastor himself at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the year 1953 prior to finishing his doctoral degree in systematic theology from Boston University on 1955. What prompted the Memphis Strike? Memphis in 1968 was ruled by a paternalistic â€Å"plantation mentality† embodied in its good-old-boy mayor, Henry Loeb. Wretched conditions, abusive white supervisors, poor education, and low wages locked most black workers into poverty (Honey, 2007). This characterization of the political, economic and social conditions of the blacks in Memphis in 1968 by Honey may be cited as cases of â€Å"manufactured and institutionalized oppression†. By manufactured and institutionalized oppression, I mean oppression which involves the mechanisms of law and power relations the basis of which is against the ‘natural law’. Natural law theorists, following the thoughts of St. Augustine that â€Å"an unjust law is not a law at all† and Aquinas’ notion of â€Å"law as an ordinance of reason†, view morality as essentially tied up with the very essence of law. How does King figure in all of this? How can we explain the evolution of King’s ideological perspective? The point is clear: Oppression and unfair treatment of individuals is not morally valid nor is it morally permissible most especially if the basis of such is the individual’s ethnicity or race. As the Kantians believed, each person has a capacity for rational deliberation and choice and as such, an autonomous being with dignity and therefore, ought to be respected by virtue of being human persons. The evolution of King’s ideological perspective may therefore be construed in such way that it is a product, both of his experiences as a black living in a white-dominated society and his philosophical and political development and this may be inferred from Fairclough’s book, â€Å"Martin Luther King, Jr.†, 1995. King’s speeches very clearly communicate his views: â€Å"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality†¦.I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits[†¦] (as cited by Carson, 1998). Three important points about King and his political thrusts, philosophical orientation and as to why he may be called a â€Å"radical democrat† may be inferred from the aforementioned quotation. First, as a leading figure in â€Å"civil rights movement† King believed in the tenets of democracy and liberalism in the sense that he believed that both white and black Americans must have fair treatment in the realm of the law, for the purpose of law itself is the administration of social justice. Second, he believed in the â€Å"non-necessity of violence†. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s â€Å"civil disobedience†, he believed that there are peaceful ways in and through which the problem of political and economic injustice may be resolved. It may further be inferred that for him, political, economic and social change can best be achieved not through violence [and that the government should not keep itself busy from going to war, as in the case of the Vietnam War] nor by transforming a portion or a sector of society but what is needed is a restructuring of the society as a whole. King believed that a â€Å"revolution of values† is a matter of strict necessity. King’s views may be identified as â€Å"radical† in this sense. He emphasized the need to restructure even how we think about black Americans or African Americans. It may be inferred that racism, the feeling of being superior over another race or ethnic group or nationality is grounded on the wrong premises; wrong modes of thinking and reasoning. It is by transforming our psyche and by appealing through reason and conscience that society as a whole may chart its rightful path towards genuine social change. Third, he believed and fought not only for civil rights but also for economic changes especially labor rights and lobbied for law reforms to be enacted to protect Negroes from exploitation and oppressive schemes adopted by employers. These include fair treatment and equal work opportunity, just compensation, etc. This is how he carried out his beliefs in the Memphis Strike and the Poor People’s Campaign. King served as a voice crying for the emancipation not only of black Americans but also of other human beings from the chains of oppression. Based on the above discussion, we can see why King believed that the problems and conflicts brought about by war, racism and economic injustice are all intertwined. What we can infer from his views is the interweaving and interconnecting patterns brought about by racism itself. But racism is not in itself the root of the problem; it is merely an effect of a traceable cause. This cause, this root of racism, is none other than a distorted value system, a wrong frame of mind resulting to feelings of superiority and even contempt and hate which further results to taking an unfair advantage of other human beings, plus a very materialistic market essentially driven by capital. The fault is, at bottom, deeply embedded with the minds of persons and a wrong value system, a wrong sense of pride and nationality, for it fails, in the Kantian sense, to respect persons for the sake of being human persons, not as mere means and tools that another person or race may use but as ends-in-themselves, possessing the capacity for rational thought, capable of making rational choices and thereby, beings that are autonomous and dignified and for the aforementioned reasons, deserve to be respected. The Train Essay Example

The Train Essay The blistering cold numbed my eyes as I stumbled through the biting snow, dragging a dull, faded suitcase overloaded with necessities behind me, leaving a train in the deadly, ice snow. All abroad! a man in a bright red suit, a funny red hat and an equally crimson nose called, his voice straining to be heard over the howling wind. I struggled up to him and handed over my ticket, which was faded from sweat, tears and the bitter snow. Then man, whom I safely assumed was the train conductor, glanced briefly at the ticket, then smiled at me slightly. Terrible morning isnt it? he commented. I did not reply. In for a long ride, I see! he added when he saw my ticket. I gave no response as I checked my heavy bag. He beamed wider as he said, Welcome aboard the Windows Express, maam! I tried to smile back, but my scarf was bundled around my nose and my mouth, so I nodded instead. Thank you. My voice was barely audible over the gusty breeze as I stepped off the platform and boarded the tra in. The front compartment was crowded, packed like sardines. I squeezed past the numerous bodies to get to the next train ar, which was where I was to be seated. Even though the warmth there was comforting, I hoped it was not too stuffy in my car. I finally broke free from the crowd, swinging the car door open and entering a considerably cooler car. I removed my scarf from my face. My skin was raw with cold, but I barely felt it. I glanced around. This car was deserted, the seats along its aisle empty. I checked the number of compartment I had been assigned then opened the door to it. There was a small bunk bed in the corner, with a little closed off area I guessed was the bunk. I lanced out the single window, but there was nothing to be seen through the fog and slat than plummeted so hard against the glass it felt like hail. Feeling slightly claustrophobic in the narrow compartment, I briskly threw off my jacket and exited, walking back into the aisle. I noticed a door at the back of the car and decided to check it out. I made my way down the aisle and slid the door open. It led into the next car. This one did not have seats, but little booths lined up neatly along either side. There was a bellboy near the back, tending to a little refreshment stand. His eyes were bored, even as he attempted to reet me pleasantly. Hello, maam, welcome to the lounge. Would you like anything? Some pie, perhaps, or a cup of coffee? Uninterested, I declined politely, just as another door caught my eye. Without thinking, I flung it open. There was nothing in the room except a door with a window fixed into it, and a shiny red handle. This is where youll be disembarking, the bellboy informed me. That theres the emergency brake, he added, pointing at the handle. Youre perfectly welcome to pull that at any time. Taken aback, I spluttered on my Coke. What? I wouldnt. Thats ridiculous. Then how will I get to where I am going? I demanded incredulously. The bellboy shrugged. Sometimes you cant rely on trains to get you to where you want to go. I stared openly at him. Quickly dismissing him as crazy, I turned away and hastily returned to my compartment. Once safely inside, I lay on my bed, thinking to myself about my destination, a place I had never been and a face I had not seen for so many years it hurt to think about it. Flashbacks began to attack my once- peaceful mind, invading my would be calm pondering. At four years old, my hands pressed tightly over my ears, rying in vain to block out the sounds of heated arguments over nothing. Seven years old, an empty bottle crashing over my head as I tried to escape the debris of broken plates. Thirteen years, bruises covering my face, blood on my hands, a broken ankle, pain enveloping my body. Sixteen, my broken ribs causing me to shake as I slammed the front door behind me and limped as fast as I could into the night, my mother screaming for me to come home and my fathers threats chasing after me I jerked awake, nearly falling out of bed. My head felt heavy, and my eyes groggy, as if I had not slept or days. Sluggishly, I checked my watch, which still hung from my wrist. My eyes snapped wide open as they read the time, then relaxed again. My watch had stopped at around the same time I boarded that train. I got up, feeling tired, and felt my stomach growl. I stood up, stretched, brushed my hair and hurridly with my fingers and left my compartment. I was about to go to the lounge to eat when I noticed another girl sitting on a seat in the aisle, next to the window. She was clothed very thinly for the morbid weather, and her long locks of auburn hair poured over her shoulders. Hello, I said, and she jumped in surprised. Sorry for startling you, but do you have the time? She looked up at me, and I saw a thin ragged face that would have been pretty if not for the exhaustion consuming it, and the melancholy sadness in her eyes. Oh hello, its quite alright. Let me check. She lifted her mobile phone from her pocket, glanced at it, then shook her head apologetically. Strange. It seems to have died. I couldve sworn I charged it yesterday. I thanked her anyway, and asked her where she was going. She looked even weary when I questioned her. Im going to see my long-distance partner for four years, she said, in an almost rehearsed answer. I think he may propose to me, but I doubt Im ready for such a change. She drifted off, her voice trailing away, then came to her senses and asked me where I was headed. Im going to see my father. I havent seen him for nearly a decade, I said quietly. I cant say Im looking forward to it. She agreed with me, and we made small talk for awhile longer before I excused myself and when to the lounge. The bellboy was not there anymore, and I breathed an inward sigh of relief. The batty guy had freaked me out. I saw someone sitting down in one of the lounge booths. Hidden behind stacks of paperwork and a newspaper sat a middle aged man in an impressive suit and tie, muttering to himself in what looked like disgust. I walked over to him. Hi, sorry to bother you, but do you know what time it is? He glanced up and stopped grumbling. Hmm? Oh, yes. he shot a look at his fancy wristwatch. Well, what is this? My watch isnt working! He began to mumble again. I found it strange that nobody knew the time, so I stole a glimpse of the watch, and sure enough it ceased to ick. That’s a shame, I said good-naturedly, and asked him what he was doing. Its for a case I have, he replied. I must have looked puzzled, because he elaborated. Im a lawyer, you see, and Im about to defend the biggest drug cartels of all time- then again, I probably shouldn’t have told you that. I was about to leave him in peace when he continued on. In my defense, my client is one of my oldest friends. I owe him my life and hes gotten me out tons of scraps. I really have no choice. I began to feel a little uncomfortable, and averted my gaze to rest on the window. To my surprise, evening was over-the sun was rising on another day! Had I missed my stop? I was supposed to be off the train by dusk, yet here was dawn, a new day beginning right before my eyes! Panicking, I ran back to my car and asked the girl still sitting on he seat, What time did you get on? Which state are you going to? Bewildered, she told me the details of her travel. I calculated in my head. But what would only take you a few hours! You should have arrived by now, I said, unable to keep my voice from getting louder. She seemed indifferent. Maybe we made a few stops along the way. I wasnt awake the whole time, you know. But I had it all figured out. The pieces of the puzzle were coming together, forming an unbelievable picture in my head. I ran back into the lounge, and flung open the door at the back of it, where the emergency brake ws. The lady came racing after me, asking where I was going. Look, it’s the emergency brake. If we pull it, well be able to get out of here! I exclaimed. She looked at me the same way I had looked at the bellboy- as if one of us had gone bonkers. What? Are you crazy? Why? Its ridiculous. Then how will I ever get to where Im going? I smiled at the distinct resemblance her words had to mine. Reaching over, I grasped the red handle in my right hand and pulled as hard as I could. The train screeched against the metal of the tracks. I pushed against the exit door, and it opened easily. I leaped off the train. The ground was icy and cold beneath my feet, and the cold wind cut my uncovered face like a knife. I became aware that I did not even have my jacket with me as the cold began to envelope my very being. What are you doing? Youll freeze to death! the girl cried next to me. You dont even have your suitcase with you. I vaguely recalled my stuffed baggage, filled with things I suddenly realized were of no importance to me. And just like that, suddenly, I felt free. Free of all my emotional baggage, free of everything that weigh me down, free of guilt, pain and sorrow. A sense of warmth, a beautiful feeling, filled up my body, and I no longer felt the chill. I turned ba ck to the train, smiling for the first time in years. Why don’t you come with me? I asked the girl. She shook her head, eyes wide. And then the train door slammed shut, and began to move again. Free of doubt, I turned from the sight of the train slowly resending out of sight until it vanished, and began to trudge through the snow, in the direction of my destination. Sometimes we are weighed down by the pain, grief and guilt. We go through life day by day, merely existing, not living, and time stands still. Those days we live, so burdened by emotions, are meaningless and pas by without notice of purpose. If we could just let go of it all, forget our troubles for a few seconds, and look around us, perhaps we would see the beauty we are meant to see, and the wonder we would feel if we only let go.

How to Build and Create Links in PHP

How to Build and Create Links in PHP Websites are filled with links. Youre probably already aware of how to create a link in HTML. If youve added PHP to your web server to be able to enhance your sites capabilities, you may be surprised to learn that you create a link in PHP the same as you do in  HTML. You have a few options, though. Depending on where in your file the link is, you might present the link HTML in a slightly different way. You can switch back and forth between PHP and HTML in the same document, and you can use the same software- any plain text editor will do- to write PHP as to write HTML. How to Add Links to PHP Documents If you are making a link in a PHP document  that is outside of the PHP brackets, you just use HTML as usual. Here is an example: a hrefhttps://twitter.com/angela_bradleyMy Twitter/a ?php - My PHP Code ? If the link needs to be inside  the PHP, you have two options. One option is to end the PHP, enter the link in HTML, and then reopen PHP. Here is an example: ?php - My PHP Code ? a hrefhttps://twitter.com/angela_bradleyMy Twitter/a ?php - My PHP Code ? The other option is to print or echo the HTML code inside  the PHP. Here is an example: ?php Echo a hrefhttps://twitter.com/angela_bradleyMy Twitter/a ? Another thing you  can do is create a link from a variable. Lets say that the variable $url holds the URL for a website that someone has submitted or that you have pulled from a database. You can use the variable in your HTML. a hrefhttps://twitter.com/angela_bradleyMy Twitter/a ?php Echo a href$url$site_title/a ? For Beginning PHP Programmers If you are new to PHP, remember you begin and end a section of PHP code using ?php and ? respectively. This code lets the server know that what is included is PHP code. Try a  PHP beginners tutorial to get your feet wet in the programming language. Before long, youll be using PHP to set up a member login, redirect a visitor to another page, add a survey to your website, create a calendar, and add other interactive features to your webpages.

Evaluate the claim that we should seek to abolish imprisonment Essay

Evaluate the claim that we should seek to abolish imprisonment - Essay Example orms of punishment are introduced, according to jurisprudential rational, to control such rate of crime and protect the basic rights of common people within a socio-cultural context. According to the varying degrees regarding seriousness of crime commission, various types of punishments are offered to offenders, namely, â€Å"condemnation, fines, probation, imprisonment, or death† and legislative system of a particular society provides actual directives that what type of punishment can be offered for a specific form of crime. Imprisonment is widely regarded, perhaps, as the â€Å"strongest form of punishment† after death penalty and mostly offered to people accused of culpable offences (Coughlin, 1991, p. 54). Tony Lawson and Joan Garrod have attempted to define imprisonment in the book Dictionary for Sociology, as, â€Å"†¦the incarnation of those convicted of certain types of crime. Also in prison are those held â€Å"on remand,†- i.e. accused of a serious crime and awaiting a trial. Different societies hold different views regarding the purpose of imprisonment, with the result that the proportion of the population in prison at any one time varies widely among different societies† (Lawson, and Garrod, 2001, p. 117-118). This definition becomes important in the context of discussion as it encompasses within its scope both legal and social perspectives. In the first part, the authors have defined what imprisonment is from legal perspective. Second part of the definition focuses on social aspects that purpose and reason for imprisonment differs in different societies; thus, society has an important role to play when it comes to nature of imprisonment or establishing the criteria regarding magnitude of crime so that a person is sentenced for imprisonment. According to magnitude of crime, punishment can be categorized in several forms, namely, capital punishment, imprisonment, probation, fines, restitution and community service, and restorative justice (Gaines, and

Research paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 3

Research paper - Essay Example The essence of all these tax systems is to collect tax for the government, and enhance the ability of the government to provide essential goods and eservices to its citizens. Nevertheless, the application of different types of tax systems and their calculations have been confusing to the citizens. While some tax systems seem to create equality for all people, regardless of whether they are rich or poor, others seem to favor the poor, by making the rich pay higher taxes. Taxation should have a neutral effect on all people, considering that it is not a voluntary contribution, but an enforced contribution established by the laws (Robert, 194). Nevertheless, to help close the gap between the rich and the poor, and create a system of fairness, people should pay taxes based on the income that they earn. Therefore, the rich should pay higher taxes than the poor. Making the rich pay higher taxes than the poor will increase the efficiency of income distribution in the economy. When the rich p eople are taxed higher than the poor through the progressive tax system, which increases the rate of taxation with an increase in the income to be taxed, the amount of tax obtained is relatively higher to the one obtained when a flat rate of tax is applied (Robert, 191). This being the case, it increases the amount of resources that the government has at hand, which can then be reinvested back to the economy, through enhancing and increasing the provision of goods and services to the citizens. However, if all people are taxed at a flat rate, the rich will certainly save more than the poor, since after the taxation, they will be left with a higher amount of income. The problem with this concept is the fact that the rich may choose to save the extra income they have, other than reinvest it in the economy, creating a shortage of the resources circulating in the economy, thus making the provision of essential goods and eservices inefficient (Robert, 196). Therefore, the intervention of the government to ensure a higher taxation of the rich, compared to the poor is vital, since it forces the rich to release the extra income and place it at the disposal of the economy, where it can be used to serve all people, and mostly the poor, through providing them with essential services, since they need them more than the rich. Another reason why the rich should be taxed more than the poor is the fact that this would increase the purchasing power of the poor, who are the majority in the economy. Taxing the rich more than the poor means that the poor will be left with a higher percentage of their revenues at their disposal (Robert, 192). This makes it possible for their purchasing power to be increased, which also serves to stimulate the economic contribution they make to the economy. The higher the purchasing power of the people, the higher the contribution they make to the economy. Additionally, taxing the rich higher than the poor will make it possible for the poor to save a substantial quantity of their incomes, and then start investing into the economy through starting small businesses (Robert, 195). This is beneficial compared to taxing all people at a flat rate, which would mean that the rich people would save more of their incomes than the poor, since the rich do not necessarily need to invest. Therefore, while income in the hands of the poor is

The Micmac V.s. The Iroquois :: essays research papers

The Micmac V.S. The Iroquois   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although the Micmac and the Iroquois Confederacy are both Aboriginal groups, they have many differences as well as similarities. One area of such, is their traditional justice systems. Their governments and laws are in some ways similar, but in many ways different.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Micmac reside in what is now Nova Scotia, eastern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and southern Gaspe. The territory was subdivided in to seven districts. Each of these districts contained family groupings in small settlements based on hunting and fishing. Those from P.E.I. held more territory in common than any other Micmac district. Their land was allotted by family.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Iroquois were a agricultural people. They lived in permanent villages in a domain now called southern Ontario, southern Quebec, and northeastern United States. Indian Nations living here formed a formal and lasting confederacy by 1450. Their members were called ‘Ho-De-No-Sau-Nee'. The league was called ‘Kanonsionni', meaning EXTENDED HOUSE. The first five nations to join the confederacy were Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. Tuscaroras migrated from Carolina and joined the confederacy in 1722. The Iroquois are bound in a treaty of friendship with the Ojibway to the North.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Micmac government was three-tiered, with local, district, and national chiefs, or ‘Sagamores'. Each settlement's council of elders chose a local chief. The chief was the focus of power in the settlement. The local chief attained position through both hereditary right and meritorious behavior. The oldest son of a dead chief was usually given first consideration as a successor. If he was found unfit for office, despite special training, others in family and/or others in the community were considered. These chiefs usually had two assistants or captains. These were called second and third watchers. They would assume command from a sick or incompetent chief. The local chiefs would convene in a district council and select one of their numbers to preside over their meetings and represent the regions' interests. Councils usually met in the spring or fall, and all decisions were based on unanimity.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  District Sagamores made up the governing body of the Micmac nation. One district chief would act as Grand Chief. All three of these types of chieftainship followed bloodlines as a natural course of leadership ascendency. The people expected their chief to be a man of intelligence, knowledge, dignity, courage, generosity, an able hunter, and fearless warrior. Leaders ruled through impeccable example, not force.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Iroquois confederacy was formalized by a constitution, recorded on wampum belts to preserve the understanding for all generations to follow. Each nation retained its own council and managed its own local affairs. General control was to be lodged in a federal senate, composed of representatives
